Which blinds for your lounge?

Luckily, most styles of blinds are suitable for use in the lounge, which leaves you with more freedom to choose the type you prefer. Your choice will most probably be guided by the size of your windows, your personal preference and your budget.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when choosing blinds for your lounge:

• Vertical blinds look great on large windows such as French windows, and offer great light control, as the slats can be adjusted to direct the incoming light. The blinds can also be pulled completely to one side to let in the maximum amount of light.

• The accurate light control afforded by vertical and venetian blinds can be useful in lounges that are in direct or strong sunlight. This can cause fading in upholstery and furnishings, but the right blinds can provide protection.

• Wooden or wooden effect blinds can transform the atmosphere of a room, making it feel warm and cosy. Alternatively, you can increase the feeling of space by choosing plain fabrics rather than slats, in neutral or light colours.

• Be careful when choosing patterned fabrics, and make sure that they will complement your existing décor, as they will become a focal point for the room.

How to choose your new blinds

If you are considering buying blinds for your home, make sure you take your time to work out which is the best option for you in terms of design and practical use. Blinds are easy to maintain and durable, so make the right choice and your blinds will prove to be cost-effective and stylish window dressings!

1. Which room? Think about the kind of environment the blinds will be in, as certain designs may suit more than others. Roller blinds are particularly well-suited to bathrooms and kitchens, whereas wooden blinds certainly are not! Take into account the amount of sunlight the room is exposed to, and the amount of light control needed.

2. Colours or patterns? Blinds can be a visual focus in a room, adding to the feel; alternatively, you may want them to blend into the background so that other elements take centre stage. This will certainly influence your decision. Wooden blinds can add warmth to an interior, while white or light blinds can create the feeling of space. Patterns can create contrast or depth, although make sure you order a sample before you decide! If you like to change your décor fairly regularly, go for something a little more neutral that could complement different interior styles.

Choosing blinds online made easy

One of the problems with choosing a blind from a retail store is they usually come in predetermined sizes. This mean that unless you are prepared to compromise on the size, and fit them over the window instead of in the recess, they will generally not fit the sizes of window you have in your home.

This doesn’t have to be the case however. If you order your blinds online, the online blind company will make your blind to the exact size you stipulate, in the colour you stipulate too. It’s easy to order online, you simply have to follow the eight step process below.

1. Choose the type of blind you want – roller, Roman, vertical etc.
2. Choose the style of colour you want
3. Choose the fabric type
4. Enter the width you require and the drop you require
5. Calculate the price
6. Choose options such as control method, slat size, recess, bunch and bracket type
7. Add the number of blinds you require to you basket
8. Select the bottom pattern of the blind (for roller blinds)

Three types of blinds suitable for everyday use

A quick and easy way to transform a room is to change the window decoration. Many people choose to use curtains at a window, simply because they are the traditional window covering solution. However, blinds are slowly gaining in popularity and are no longer just seen in offices.

Some of the most popular blinds used in homes include:

Vertical blinds

Vertical blinds offer a great deal of flexibility to the home owner. The blinds can be retracted completely when not in use or can be left hanging vertically from the window to give not just a degree of privacy, but also a bold style statement.

Roman blinds

Roman blinds have a unique folding mechanism and offer a little more in terms of class than other types of blinds. Available in luxurious fabrics, the blind’s lowering cord can be pulled to lift the blind or let out to lower the blind.

Wooden blinds

For those homeowners who feel that they don’t want to create the clinical look that vertical blinds produce or the classical look that Roman blinds give out, a good mid-way choice is a wooden blind. Just the colour of a traditional wooden blind can add a great deal of warmth to any room.

Creating a natural look

Design trends at the moment are greatly influenced by the use of natural materials, partly because of changing attitudes to our environment and its importance. Using natural influences in the design of your home has other benefits too, and can create a warm, comfortable and peaceful atmosphere.

Wooden blinds can add a warm touch to any room, and can be particularly effective if they pick up the same wood present elsewhere in the room. Use the contrast of colours and light and dark to transform the look of the room with only some new blinds and a lick of paint on the walls.

If you want the wooden look in your bathroom or kitchen, then avoid buying real wood and go for one of the wood effect aluminium blinds. Wood can warp in humid conditions, whereas the wood effect slats will withstand the conditions as well as being easy to clean!

And if you are looking for natural materials but don’t want wood, then take a look at the other options. Vertical blind slats are available in bark, bamboo, beech and straw, while roller blind designs can look like linen, rattan and other natural materials.

Give your interiors a lift at a low cost

If, like me you tire easily of the decoration in your home, and love to update it on a regular basis; or even if you are simply looking for a low-cost solution to give your home a lift, then think about fitting blinds…

Blinds are branching out these days, and are not just limited to acting as window coverings. People are using them as an alternative to screens or partitions to model interior spaces and create adjustable new living areas. They are also being used to cover alcoves used for storage, bookshelves, and replacing cupboard doors!

The different types of blinds available also mean that you have a range of choice of form. Horizontal and vertical lines, as found in venetian, wooden and vertical blinds can change the perception of space within a room, making it feel longer or taller.

Colours and patterns can also greatly influence the feel of an interior. Choosing blinds that add a splash of colour or interest can be an inexpensive way of transforming your décor. Complement or echo existing colours, or use the blinds to create contrast. Light-coloured blinds or those that filter the light can make a room feel more spacious and airy.

Sun protection

If you have chosen blinds to offer light control and privacy to a room that is exposed to a lot of sunlight, how do you choose which type is best?

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are very good at blocking light when necessary, although specially designed blackout fabrics are also available if necessary. They also allow a high degree of light control. Turning the slats will allow you to decide exactly how much light you want coming into the room, as well as giving you the option of choosing the direction of the light, too. Unlike roller or roman blinds, vertical blinds allow you to control the view. You can still get the benefit of seeing out of your window while maintaining privacy and avoiding too much sunlight.

Roller Blinds
A great choice if you are shopping on a budget. Roller blinds are also available in blackout fabrics, and look fantastic as bedroom blinds. They are effective at blocking the light and ensuring complete privacy when closed. Of course, you are not able to control light and heat without losing some of your view, but for style and value, roller blinds are the best choice.

Blinds for the sunny side of your house

Although we all complain that there isn’t enough sun in the UK, sometimes it can cause problems in the home. If you have rooms facing the sun, you may encounter certain inconveniences:

1. Bedrooms – children get up early at the best of times, but if their bedroom window coverings provide insufficient light control, they could be getting up even earlier.

2. Fading – too much strong sunlight will have a detrimental effect on your soft furnishings and any paintings you may have on the walls. Items with colour need protecting from the bleaching effects of the sun.

3. Heat – prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the inside of these rooms to become unbearably hot. Suitable window coverings do and can provide a certain amount of heat control and deflect direct sunlight.

4. Glare – it can be impossible trying to watch the television or work on the computer if too much sunlight causes glare from the screens. Blinds can control the amount of light coming into the room, meaning you don’t have to sit in the dark!

If there are rooms in your house that are affected by the above problems, choosing a type of blind designed to address these problems can improve your living environment.

Which blinds are best for you?

It can seem like there is so much choice that deciding which blinds will be best for you is a rather difficult task. All you need to do, however, is ask yourself a few simple questions, and the answers should define the type that best suits your needs. Remember, blinds can be wonderfully stylish, but they are designed to fulfil a function.

1. In which direction do your windows face? This will determine the amount of sunlight that they and your room will be exposed to. This, in turn, affects the amount of heat and light control necessary.

2. What is the room used for? Communal areas such as dining or living rooms maybe require less privacy and light control than other rooms. Bedrooms may need blackout blinds in order to block out those early summer sunrises. Bedrooms and bathrooms need a blind that will allow total privacy.

3. Which type of window will they cover? Make sure that the type of blind you choose will still allow you to open the window easily. The blinds can change the aspect of certain windows, too. For example, vertical blinds look particularly good on glazed doors or French windows.

4. What is your budget? Some types of blind are more expensive than others, so take this into account when making your choice.

Choosing the best blinds for your bathrooms

Bathrooms, like kitchens, can be quite hostile environments for window coverings and it is important to take this into account when deciding which type to have. Bathrooms are humid places and blinds will be exposed to heat and steam. You need to make sure that the blinds you choose will not retain moisture, which could lead to the growth of mould.

The other role of bathroom blinds is to provide privacy. Before you buy, think about whether you need the blinds to let light in and hide people from view at the same time. You need to take into account the way the blinds open – from bottom to top or from side to side for example.

Roller blinds cope extremely well in the humid conditions of the bathroom. They do not absorb moisture and are easy to keep clean, making them ideal. Their simple design, combined with a bright and modern fabric can enhance any bathroom design.

Venetian blinds are another type that is well-suited to coping with condensation. The aluminium slats are again easy to keep clean, and also provide excellent light control while blocking the view from the exterior.
